A Step-by-Step Guide to Selling Your Junk Car

Posted on: 17 May 2022

Storing a junk car on your property not only prevents you from using that space for other purposes, but it can also be a real eyesore depending on the condition of the vehicle. The good news is that getting rid of your old junk car can be much easier than you think and even put a few extra dollars in your pocket. You can complete this task by following the simple step-by-step guide below.

Step 1: Contact Auto Salvage Yards in Your Area to Find a Buyer

Auto salvage yards routinely offer cash for junk cars. In order to get a purchase offer on your junk car, you will need to reach out to a salvage yard in your local area. When making this phone call you should be prepared to answer some basic questions regarding the vehicle you wish to sell. You will need to provide information including the make and model of the vehicle, whether or not the car has had any parts removed from it, and whether or not there are any aftermarket parts on the vehicle. You may also be asked about the current condition of the tires so that the salvage yard can determine what type of tow truck will be required in order to transport the vehicle. Once you have provided all of this information, you will likely be able to receive a cash offer for your junk car. In order to ensure you are getting the most money for your junk car, you will want to contact several salvage yards before accepting an offer.

Step 2: Complete Any Necessary Documentation Regarding the Sale

Selling a junk car to a salvage yard is much like selling a vehicle to a private buyer in the fact that you will need to complete some paperwork in order to legally transfer ownership of the vehicle. This can be accomplished in two ways. The first way is to simply sign the back of the vehicle's title and fill in the buyer's information. The second way in which this can be accomplished is only used when a person does not have the title to the vehicle in hand. This option is to complete a bill of sale and an affidavit of ownership. These are both legal documents that allow a person to attest to the fact they are the legal owner of the vehicle and that they are selling it to the designated buyer.

Step 3: Have the Vehicle Towed and Receive Your Payment

It is common practice for salvage yards or junk car buyers to dispatch a tow truck to your location once you have accepted their offer to purchase your junk car. Once you have completed all of the necessary documentation, the vehicle will be loaded onto the tow truck and the driver will provide you with your cash payment.
